BC Etiquette 101

Hey guys. We at BC wanted to create this blog post to help members both new and experienced, maximize their experience each and every time you come to class. Crossfit is built on community, and keeping the community in mind when between the 4 wall of BC will help you and us run classes as smoothly and timely as possible. Here are just a few quick tips to play your part.

1) Try Your Best to be On Time

Life happens, and we'll always welcome you into class regardless of you being late. We've all had to come to class late at one point or another, but if you show up late, wait for the coach to finish explaining and let them get you caught up in the safest and most efficient way possible.

2) Sign Up For Class

If every once in a while you forget to reserve a spot in class, a coach will sign you in. However, coaches look at who's signed up prior to class starting and prepare for the amount of people who are reserve. Some days, depending on the equipment needed, we set up the room accordingly. Showing up without signing up can take up more time than allotted for when additional equipment needs to be taken out.

3) Late Cancel/No Show Fees

Each week (typically on Thursdays) we run a report from the previous Monday-Sunday that provides us with a list of all late cancels and no shows (reserved but not checked in). The $5 charge is applied to every name on the list. We have receive countless emails due to lack of understanding of why members are receiving these charges. Most often, these charges are a result of true no shows, or members failure to forget themselves into class. Get in the habit of checking yourself into class first thing when you walk in the doors. If you make it a daily habit, you'll avoid the annoying $5 charge.

4) Navigating the Gym

  1. J-Hooks can be found in the orange buckets in the corner by the fractional plates and the corner by the rig closest to the bathrooms. Note, the rig closer to the bathroom is slightly skinnier than the one closest to retail, so only those specific J Hooks will work on each respective area.
  2. Barbells are color coated: Green = 15 lbs, Orange = 35 lbs, Blue = 45 lbs
  3. Plates are also color coated: Red = 10 lbs, Yellow = 15 lbs, Blue = 25 lbs, Orange = 35 lbs, Thickest (no color) = 45 lbs
  4. Dumbbells are split into two racks. The racks closest to the door have dumbbells from 5-35 lbs. The rack closest to the treadmill have dumbbells from 40-50 lbs with heavier (60-100 lbs) underneath.
    1. Note: When finished using dumbbells, please put them back in their proper place with the weight pointed straight up so the next member to use them can read the weight and use them easily and quicker.
  5. Wall Balls are located directly to the left of the smaller garage door.
    1. After using them leave them in the proper place with the weight facing out for the next member to use them.
  6. Jump Ropes are hung on the wall right between the stairs to the loft and the bikes.
    1. After using them leave them in the proper place for the next member to use them.
  7. Wipe Dispensers are located on the wall closest to the benches, the wall by the whiteboard behind the plates, and on top of the garbage by retail, the garbage by the barbells next to the boxes, and the garbage by the ipad used for checkins/retail.

5) Wiping Down Equipment

Anytime you use any equipment, rowers, bikes, jump ropes, dumbbells, wall balls, abmats, barbells, etc. please wipe them down with the wipes in the dispensers to ensure the highest level of cleanliness at BC.

6) Chalk belongs on your hands, or in the buckets. Nowhere else. Nuff said on that one.

7) Empty barbells, and barbells with the big plastic 5s, wooden plates, 10s, or metal plates only are not to be dumped.

8) Wait until everyone is done with the workout before cleaning up your equipment. If you have to leave, leave your equipment and a friend or coach will put your equipment away.

9) When storing rowers on the wall, fold down the monitor and fully release the handles. This protects the machine from potential damage, maintains proper alignment, and simply saves space. Folding the monitor helps protect it from impact if the rower is bumped into a wall. Make sure the handle is released from the hook and back in the cage portion of the rower. Leaving the handle in the hook can stretch the bungee system and cause it to wear out prematurely.

If you keep these nine things in mind, you will maximize your BC experience as well as the experience of your coaches and fellow members.
